Dear Elif,
I am an Armenian Canadian born in Istanbul but have not been back for 40 years. I just finished "The Bastard of Istanbul" and must say that it is one of the best books that I have read in recent years. You took a delicate subject and treated it in such a balanced fashion. I miss the sights, sounds and smells of simits and all other mezes in Istanbul, one day I hope to go back to visit.

"The Flea Palace" stands comparison with Jane Austen, and if Ms Safak s open-mindedness, humour and human sympathy prevail in Turkey, the country could be a valuable partner in the EEC. Incidentally, Muge Gocek s translation is a tour de force.
