Here is an announcement I sent out to the over 200 people on my Sufi contact List.
Selam
I whole heartedly recommend buying and reading Elif Shafak’s latest book. It is called The Forty Rules of Love. It is the story of Mevlana/Maulana Rumi’s relationship with the wandering dervish Shams –i –Tabrizi.
Shafak based the novel on her discussions with Sufi teachers in Turkey, so she is drawing upon the authentic inner traditions of what transpired between Shems and Rumi and within the community in Konya at the time.
In Turkey, where it was published last year, they simply entitled it “AªK” -- Love.
I have attached a few of Sham’s ‘rules.’

As Salam Alaykum,
Elif Shafak
I have been a Muslim on the Sufi way for more than twenty years. I am totally enjoying your impressions and reflections. Your books is filled with insight into the hypocrisies of those who claim to be people of God, but will ever Behold Him, because they refuse to subdue their Nafs , and prejudgments.
I found an uncorrected, unpublished copy your book Forty rules of Ishq(love) at a coffee shop in Athens, Georgia USA, on the date of Feb. 24, 2010. Two days after its date to be published. I don’t believe in “coincidence”. I don’t wish to tell you how much I paid for it. But let’s say I felt it was a gift. I read and write a lot of Sufi poetry especially the work of Maulana Rumi(May Allah Have Mercy on Him), Sultan Bahu and the other great Lovers. Thank you. May Allah Bless you and fill your, , Ruh and Sirr with His Uncreated Divine Nur and Ishq.

I just read the Bastard of Istanbul. I read it in Italian, and it was beautiful. I also wanted to say that it was very helpful to me, as I grapple with the same issues(as an Armenian) and have many friends in Turkey. This book was a gift from you to those of us who wish to find peace. thankyou for this gift.
